Skimboarding in Cyprus: A Fun and Accessible Beach Sport
Share
Skimboarding is a simple but exciting water sport that can be enjoyed by children, teenagers and adults. Unlike surfing, you do not need to paddle into deep water or wait for large waves. A skimboard is used close to the shoreline, where the rider runs, drops the board onto a thin layer of water and jumps onto it to glide across the wet sand.
This makes skimboarding an excellent activity for Cyprus, where many beaches have long sandy shorelines, warm water and suitable conditions for practising during much of the year.
What Is a Skimboard?
A skimboard is a small, finless board designed to slide across shallow water. It looks similar to a small surfboard, but it is generally shorter, thinner and does not have fins underneath.
The basic movement is simple:
- Wait for a wave to leave a thin layer of water over the sand.
- Run alongside the shoreline.
- Drop the board flat in front of you.
- Step or jump smoothly onto it.
- Bend your knees and glide across the water.
Beginners normally start by sliding in a straight line over flat, shallow water. As their confidence improves, they can learn turns, spins, small jumps and other tricks.
More experienced riders may use larger composite skimboards to ride towards breaking waves and return towards the shore. Beginner wooden skimboards, however, are mainly intended for flat-water riding close to the beach.
Who Can Use a Skimboard?
Skimboarding can be enjoyed by a wide range of people, but the board must be suitable for the rider’s weight and ability.
Children
Children can begin skimboarding once they are comfortable around the water and able to run, balance and follow basic safety instructions.
Younger riders should always practise under adult supervision.
A smaller, lightweight board is usually easier for a child to carry and control. However, the correct size should be chosen mainly according to the rider’s weight, not only their age or height.
Teenagers
Skimboarding is particularly popular with teenagers because it is active, challenging and easy to practise with friends.
A 41-inch skimboard is commonly suitable for teenagers and lighter adults, although the exact maximum rider weight depends on the individual model and construction.
Adults
Adults can also use skimboards, provided they choose a board that supports their weight.
A board that is too small may lose speed quickly, sink into the water and become more difficult to balance.
Skimboarding places pressure on the ankles, knees and lower body. Beginners should therefore start slowly and avoid attempting fast runs, jumps or advanced tricks immediately.
Is Skimboarding Suitable for Beginners?
Yes. Flat-water skimboarding is one of the more accessible board sports because beginners can practise in very shallow water without paddling into the sea.
However, it still requires timing, balance and confidence. Falling is part of the learning process.
Beginners should first practise stepping onto the board smoothly rather than jumping aggressively.
The best learning area has:
- Smooth, firm sand
- A very thin layer of water
- A wide and unobstructed shoreline
- No stones, rocks or shells
- No swimmers, sunbeds or other obstacles nearby
- Small and gentle waves
A relatively flat shoreline is especially helpful when learning the basic drop-and-glide technique.
Do Skimboards Need Wax?
Most wooden skimboards need surf wax on the upper surface.
Wax provides grip between the rider’s feet and the board, especially when the deck becomes wet.
Apply the wax mainly where the front and back feet will be positioned. There is no need to apply wax to the underside of the board.
A skimboard with a full EVA foam deck normally does not need wax because the textured foam already provides traction.
Never use a smooth wooden skimboard without wax or a traction pad. The surface can become extremely slippery and increase the risk of falling.
Where Can You Skimboard in Cyprus?
Cyprus has many sandy beaches, but conditions can change depending on the wind, waves, beach traffic and the shape of the shoreline.
A beach that is suitable in the morning may become crowded, rough or unsuitable later in the day.
Mackenzie Beach, Larnaca
Mackenzie Beach is one of the most practical locations for beginner skimboarding in Larnaca.
It has a long sandy shoreline and shallow water, giving riders space to find a clear section with a thin layer of water over the sand.
Early mornings are usually the best time because the beach is quieter and the wind is often lighter.
Riders must stay well away from swimmers, children, sunbeds and organised watersports areas.
Finikoudes Beach, Larnaca
Finikoudes can offer suitable shallow-water conditions, especially when the sea is calm.
However, it becomes very busy during summer, weekends and public holidays.
Only practise when there is a large, completely clear section of shoreline. In crowded conditions, it is safer to choose another beach or return at a quieter time.
Pyla and the Larnaca–Dhekelia Coastline
Parts of the Pyla and Dhekelia coastline have sandy sections with calm, shallow water.
These areas may be suitable for beginners, provided the shoreline is clear and free from stones, rocks and obstacles.
Always inspect the exact area before starting because the beach surface and seabed can vary from one section to another.
Ayia Napa and Protaras
The eastern coast of Cyprus has several sandy beaches where skimboarding may be possible when the shoreline is not crowded.
Beaches around Ayia Napa, Pernera and Protaras may offer clear, shallow water, but many become extremely busy during summer.
Popular beaches such as Nissi Beach and Fig Tree Bay are not automatically suitable simply because they are sandy. Crowds, swimmers and sunbeds can make them unsafe for skimboarding.
Quieter sections and early mornings are usually the better option.
Paphos
Some sandy beaches in the Paphos area may have stronger shorebreak and steeper shorelines.
These conditions may appeal to more experienced skimboarders, but they are less suitable for beginners.
Always inspect the beach for submerged rocks, sudden drops and strong backwash before entering the water.
What Are the Best Conditions?
The ideal conditions for beginner skimboarding are:
- Light wind
- Small waves
- A gently sloping sandy beach
- A thin layer of water moving over firm sand
- Plenty of empty space
Early morning is often the best time in Cyprus because beaches are generally quieter and conditions may be calmer.
Avoid practising during storms, strong winds, large shorebreak or crowded beach conditions.
Basic Skimboarding Safety
Skimboarding takes place in shallow water, but injuries can still happen.
Slipping backwards, landing awkwardly or colliding with another beach user can cause serious injury.
Always check the area before every run.
Do not skim towards people, rocks, walls, sunbeds or other obstacles.
Children should always be supervised, and beginners should avoid attempting tricks until they can mount and control the board consistently.
A skimboard should never be thrown forcefully towards the sea. It should be dropped low and flat so that it does not flip, stop suddenly or hit another person.
Choosing Your First Skimboard
When buying a skimboard, consider:
- Rider weight
- Board length and width
- Wooden or composite construction
- Flat-water or wave-riding use
- Presence of an EVA traction deck
- Manufacturer’s maximum rider weight
Wooden skimboards are generally the most practical and affordable choice for beginners.
They are mainly designed for shallow-water sliding and learning basic tricks.
Composite or fibreglass boards are lighter, faster and more buoyant, but they are usually more expensive and better suited to experienced riders who want to progress towards wave skimboarding.
Final Thoughts
Skimboarding is an enjoyable way to stay active at the beach without needing large waves or complicated equipment.
It can help develop balance, coordination, confidence and board control while offering plenty of room for progression.
Cyprus has many sandy coastlines where skimboarding can be practised, particularly around Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Protaras and selected parts of Paphos.
The key is not simply choosing a famous beach. The safest location is a quiet, sandy and obstacle-free section with shallow water and suitable conditions.
With the correct board, proper grip and a careful approach, skimboarding can become one of the most entertaining activities of the Cypriot summer.
