Every December, a little visitor arrives in homes around the world, bringing Christmas magic, laughter and plenty of surprises. Elf on the Shelf has become a much-loved Christmas tradition for families with young children, turning every morning in December into a little adventure.

What Is Elf on the Shelf?

The tradition comes from the children's book The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition. According to the story, Santa sends his Scout Elves from the North Pole to visit families during the Christmas season.

Each night, while the children are sleeping, the elf travels back to the North Pole and then returns before morning, appearing in a different place in the house.

For children, the fun starts as soon as they wake up: Where is the elf today?

When Does Elf on the Shelf Start?

The Elf usually arrives on December 1st and stays until Christmas Eve, bringing a new little surprise every morning.

On December 24th, the elf returns to the North Pole with Santa until next Christmas. 🎅

Some families introduce their elf on a different date, so you can easily adapt the tradition to suit your family.

How Does It Work?

When your elf first arrives, your children can give it a name and welcome it into the family.

Every evening, once the children are asleep, parents move the elf to a new location. Sometimes the elf simply hides somewhere unexpected, while other nights it might get up to something a little mischievous!

According to the story, children can talk to their elf but shouldn't touch it, as touching it may make its Christmas magic disappear.

Fun Elf on the Shelf Ideas

You don't need to create an elaborate scene every night. Some of the simplest ideas are often the most fun:

- Hide the elf in the Christmas tree

- Let it ride in a toy car

- Sit it beside the children's breakfast

- Make "snow angels" in flour

- Place it with a favourite toy

- Let it read a little book

- Hide it among the Christmas decorations

- Leave a small kindness challenge or Christmas message

- Surprise the children with an occasional sweet treat or tiny gift

The possibilities are endless, and every family can create its own Elf on the Shelf traditions.

A Little Christmas Magic Every Morning

One of the best things about Elf on the Shelf is the excitement it creates throughout December.

Children wake up wondering what their elf has been doing overnight and where they'll find it next. For parents, it's a fun opportunity to create little surprises, funny moments and Christmas memories that children can look forward to year after year.

It doesn't have to be complicated. The real magic is simply in the anticipation and imagination.
